This study is being run by Newcastle University, in the School of Dental Sciences and the populating Health Sciences Institute. It is being led by Andrew Geddis-Regan, supported by a team of senior researchers. The development of the Dental Decisions tool was supported by the team from Lab4Living at Sheffield Hallam University.
The study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Doctoral Fellowship NIHR300149. The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NHS, NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.
Yes, the study has been approved by a Research Ethics Committee and the Health Research Authority (Reference: 20/YH/0048)
The Dental Decisions Tool
No. The tool was designed to support people living with dementia but the co-production group identified this may help other patients too. It could be used when decision-making is simple or complex to help patients and dentists figure out what dental care might be best.
No. The tool is advisory and aims to support people with decision-making. If a person cannot make their own decisions, the tool might be useful in supporting decisions about what might be in their best interests.
You can legally decide to refuse certain types of treatment (see ‘Advance decision (living will)’ at NHS.uk). This Dental Decisions Tool is not designed to act as a way of expressing your desire to formally refuse specific treatments.
We have a limited number of copies of the tool that we can send to you. If you would like a larger number of copies we could arrange printing at your expense or provide you with the files to send to a suitable printing service.
Please let us known on our ‘Contact page’ or by email dentaldecisions@newcastle.ac.uk
Not without our permission. The paper-based, PDF and online versions of the Dental Decisions tool are copyrighted. Please contact dentaldecisions@ncl.ac.uk to discuss modification or re-use of the tool.
Dental Care
We are unable to help or advise on clinical problems. The NHS Choices website can help you find an NHS dentist who could offer appropriate assessment and advice.
Not necessarily. Dental care planning and treatment should be based on a number of factors. Dentist should discuss care with each patient to see what care is most suitable for each person.
We cannot advise on issues related to specific dental services. If you have concerns or comments that relate to your NHS care please contact Patient Advice and Liason Service (PALS) at northoftynepals@nhct.nhs.uk or 0800 032 02 02
